Chapter 20

“I never did hear from Grace after her engagement announcement on Thursday,” I told Anne as I walked into work on Monday morning.

“Well it’s such an exciting time for her, Marie, she probably just forgot. She’ll call you when things calm down again, I’m sure.” Right. So she’s having such a good time that she’s forgotten all about me. Thanks for the insight, Anne.

I looked up at the brochure wall and was surprised to notice that D3 and E5 were switched. I wandered over and moved them back to their proper places.

“Marie!” Anne looked at me with concern. “I swapped them over last week! I thought you were never going to realise. That’s not like you.”

“No. It’s not, is it? I’ve got a few things on my mind that’s all.”

“Why? What’s going on?” She prompted.

“Oh nothing much. Just Grace moving and things.”

“Well I hope you’re keeping yourself busy and not just moping around at home now that Grace has gone. You can always come over to our place on the weekends if you’re lonely.”

I looked over at Anne and smiled and then looked away quickly as I felt my eyes involuntarily well up. Obviously the thought of feeling lonely enough to visit Anne on the weekends was a depressing one, but I was genuinely touched by her concern.

I coughed to clear the lump in my throat, “Thanks, Anne. I actually had a busy weekend though. I was out with Sebastian and some friends on Friday night...”

“Not that Mr. Featherston?” I was interrupted by Anne who was rolling her eyes dramatically. “He’s a funny one, Marie. Very odd. I don’t know why you’re hanging around with him. He’s bad news if you want my opinion.”

“Well I think I can choose my own friends thanks, Anne!” I remembered my conversation with Harry on Saturday night and wondered if my statement was true. At the very least I didn’t need Anne choosing my friends for me.

“I know you can, Marie. I’m just saying that you should choose carefully.”

I sighed and decided to change the subject and avoid letting her increase my anger levels even further.

“I saw Linda on Saturday too. We went shopping together.” I switched to a more neutral topic.

“Oh lovely. How is she?”

“She’s fine. She has a few problems with her husband but that’s nothing new.” I was surprised to see Linda on my doorstep for the second Saturday in a row. She’d at least done me the courtesy of waiting until 10am this time.

“Oh the poor love; an unhappy marriage is a terrible thing. She’s lucky to have you as a friend; someone to keep her spirits up.” Amazingly there was absolutely no trace of sarcasm in her voice. I wanted to laugh but I stifled it.

“How’s Emily?” I asked.

“Oh her!” she sighed. “She’s fine. Well she’s a bit odd actually isn’t she? I enjoy my evenings there though.”

“Losing any weight?” I asked with a smirk.

“Oh, Marie, you’re such a tease! That crazy woman says we shouldn’t weigh ourselves! Some silly ideas she has.
